In an early twentieth century Mexico, the humble pastor Nazarín shares his poverty with the needy who inhabit the surroundings of the tavern of Chanfa. After protecting a prostitute who provokes the fire in the tavern, Nazarín sees himself obliged to leave the place. On the road, the actions of the religious man provoke a series of conflicts that oppose his vision of Christian charity.
