HARD SEX: SEXUALITY AND VIOLENCE IN MEXICO AND MEXICAN CINEMA

Friday 30 October 2009, 15.00 - 17.30 hrs
De Doelenzaal, University Library, Singel 425

In line with Cinemaztlán film program 'Sexuality', this debate will discuss the increasing violence surrounding sexuality processes in Mexico and how they are retrieved in Mexican cinema. The panel, consisting of Maria Deschamps (Voy a Explotar), Gert Hekma (UvA), Annelou Ypeij (CEDLA), Joan van Wijk (VU) and moderated by Lorraine Nencel (VU), will discus the way in which sexuality in Mexico has been (r)evolutionised and transformed by social, moral and personal values. In a predominantly catholic country, sexuality encounters and is influenced by various forms of exploitation and violence in present-day Mexican (and Latin American) society. As such, sexuality gets a clear political meaning within the Mexican context.

Entrance free, English spoken.
