CINEMATIC CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS: INDIGENOUS CINEMA IN MEXICO

Thursday 29 October 2009, 14.30 hrs
ISHSS(UVA), Prins Hendrikkade 189-B

This event consists of two parts in which cinematic expressions will be approached as a learning experience; what is the meaning of these works of art, which art-forms constitute its context and how do its signs and meanings migrate in a process of hybridisation in Mexico? In the first part the indigenous Mexican director Yolanda Cruz will give a masterclass in which she offers us a view on the creative process of the indigenous artist, how this emerges from her cultural context and how the 'Western' public can understand the indigenous symbols. She will enter into the differences of narrative traditions, within the process of filmmaking as well as in the film itself.

The second part will discuss the indigenous cinema in a broader perspective, in which Cruz will discuss with Prof. dr. Mieke Bal and the public if it is possible to define an indigenous aesthetics without looking for its essence and if there are cultural, social en political parallels to be drawn to other cinematic languages; what does indigenous cinema tell us? After this discussion food and drinks will be provided.

Entrance free, English spoken.
